Roblox is hosting a Lil Nas X concert in game on Nov.14

Roblox Blox Fruits Beli Roblox is hosting a Lil Nas X concert in game on Nov. 14 with a preshow starting on Nov. 13.

Lil Nas X performed to an audience of millions across two days and four shows this weekend playing in a setting that literally made him larger than life: the hit kids game Roblox. The shows gathered 33 million views in total across the performances which started on Saturday afternoon and wrapped up with a surprise encore performance on Sunday Roblox told The Verge. The identical shows starred a motion-captured incarnation of Lil Nas X styled to fit in with a world that shifted to match each of the four songs he performed.

The concert which will air on Saturday November 14th at 4 p.m. Eastern time with a pre-show Q&A at 7 p.m. Eastern time the day before is a collaboration nearly eight months in the making between Roblox Lil Nas X and his label Roblox Blox Fruits Money Columbia Records. Roblox met with Sony Music’s corporate team earlier this year looking to develop a major in-game concert; Columbia CEO Ron Perry and senior vice president of experiential marketing and business development Ryan Ruden successfully pitched Lil Nas X seeing him as the best fit for the game’s younger demographic. Ruden had previously shown interest in the concept by meeting with Roblox in October 2019 as the game was promoting itself as a potential partner to several record labels.

A number of artists have begun staging performances within the virtual world this year taking the livestream concept to a next level by entering the platforms where millions of users already spend time in a virtual environment of sorts. Fortnite has been at the forefront with Marshmello and Travis Scott already performing in that game’s ecosystem. Minecraft had an entire “Electric Blockaloo” festival earlier this year while even World of Tanks got in on the action with The Offspring. Such concerts offer performers a chance to offer a uniquely tailored performance based on the virtual environment that the platform provides and allows for additional engagement via in-game items.

Lil Nas X is not the first to host a digital concert in a video game and he’s certainly not going to be the last. Travis Scott’s Fortnite concert had over 27 million players watching so it’s not surprising to see artists do similar things.
