KartRider: Drift is a cross platform free-to-play kart racing game

Arriving in 2020 from Nexon, KartRider: Drift is the latest in a long list of games to line up on the starting grid against the acknowledged race leader, Mario Kart. Due for release next year, the intriguing prospects for this game are two fold: it will be truly free to play, with no paywalls promised, and it will feature cross-play with PC gamers. In order to test these features out, a closed beta has recently been held and so I present to you my thoughts from the racetrack/battleground.

Beta players were given access to three modes: online matchmaking, solo time trials, and the garage for character and kart customization. The online interface is simple and intuitive; with a press of the “X” button players can toggle between Solo, Duo, and Squad (four-player) races across Item Mode (featuring traditional kart racer items) and Speed Mode (no items). Switching between different configurations is a snap and, thanks to KartRacer already being such a massive game in the East, I rarely had to wait more than 20 seconds to get thrown into a match. Creating private parties and inviting friends to race is also an option. If you are in lack of KartRider Drift Coins, visit our site 5mmo.com, a reliable and cheap online in-game currency store.

Thanks to the fact that KartRider is built on a game with a long history to it, there are only a few things that need to be done to get the title into a more feature-complete state. Right now, while you are gaining XP, there doesn't seem to be anything to unlock by levelling up. If there is, it takes a while before unlocking a new cosmetic item. The kart selection is pretty good, but with only three characters available now, we are wondering how many will be available once the game formally launches. The same goes for the tracks, which are quite plentiful, but more must be available for a game that's been around this long. Finally, since this is a free-to-play title, we are wondering where monetization will occur and what the average cost for each item is.

Graphically speaking, character designs have an exaggerated look that is absolutely in keeping with the bright, technicolor environments. You'll find different tracks mixing up aesthetic elements (such as item box design) to be in keeping with the theme of that particular race. That kind of attention to detail is always appreciated. It's an Unreal Engine 4 title, with a solid framerate; another critical box tick for a competitive title. Despite some bugs that need squashing, generally speaking it's in a pretty good state.
